2019 Success Story: VITA
Rose and her family found the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program that is offered by Lifeline, in partnership with the IRS, while in the office for another program. She picked-up one of the flyers in the lobby advertising VITA and made an appointment. That was three years ago.
When Rose arrived for her first tax appointment, she was not sure if her taxes could be completed because of their complexity. Rose discovered that all VITA volunteers are thoroughly trained by the IRS to successfully complete a variety of returns including Rose’s. Her return was electronically submitted and Rose felt confident her taxes were done correctly.
“In the three years that I have utilized the VITA program with Lifeline, Inc., I have had three different individuals prepare my tax return,” said Rose. “I feel that there is consistency in the training, quality, and friendliness in this program. I also find it to be reliable and easy to schedule.”
“The VITA program is an important part of the self-sufficiency path. Being able to find a place that isn’t going to cost you what benefit you may receive from completing the return is invaluable. For our low-income households the Earned Income Tax Credit could be rent, groceries, getting caught up on utilities or any other number of financial responsibilities. This program is essential for the community,” said Tiffany Menosky, Lifeline VITA Coordinator.
