2019 Success Story: Nutrition Program

During the farmer’s market season, Lifeline offers nutrition classes for low income Lake County residents.  By attending a class, eligible participants receive a $10 voucher for the farmer’s market.  Each participant can attend three classes on a variety of topics and earn up to $30 in vouchers for the  market.  In 2019, classes were offered at the Eastlake Senior Center, the Council on Aging in Mentor, the Madison Food Center, and at Lifeline in Painesville.  Simple recipes using healthy produce were prepared in the classes.  The recipes included a berry smoothie bowl, a black bean summer salad, and homemade hummus.

Beverly attended 3 classes at Lifeline in June 2019.  She said that it was a “worthwhile program and that more people need education on nutrition.”  Beverly explained that the facilitator of the class passed out materials on the topic and prepared a recipe.  She went on to say that she has been a vegetarian for over a decade.  She feels that her health conditions improved when she changed her diet and exercise habits.  Beverly said that she would encourage others to attend the nutrition classes and shop for healthy produce at the farmer’s market.
