2019 Success Story: Bike Safety Program

In June 2019, John Sebring was referred to the Bike Program by his case manager.  The Bike Program offers eligible community members with an alternative way to get to appointments, employment, or other necessary events independently.  By referral of a collaborating Lake County social service agency, a low income customer may be eligible to receive a bike, helmet, and lock.

John participated in the bike safety class and received his bike and accessories in June 2019.  Prior to receiving the bike, John had a difficult time getting around the county because he doesn’t drive.  He said that he needed a bike but couldn’t afford one.  The bike program helped him to become less dependent on others for his transportation needs.  John said,

“It’s a good program.  I am able to go out and pay my bills or get to medical appointments.  I am able to throw it on the bus,” said John.

John uses his bike in conjunction with public transportation and is now able to go just about anywhere in the county independently.  He would definitely recommend the Bike Program to others who struggle with transportation issues.
